Illegal Betting on Grand National Horse Race Predicted to Hit £10M

The Grand National is expected to witness an alarming rise in illegal betting, with industry analysts projecting that nearly £10 million will be wagered through unregulated channels. This surge in illicit gambling raises concerns over player safety, tax revenue losses, and financial threats to the horse racing industry.

The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), representing over 90% of the UK’s licensed betting industry, has highlighted the increasing influence of black-market operators on one of Britain’s most anticipated sporting events. According to the BGC, an estimated £9.4 million will be placed with illegal betting platforms, accounting for approximately 3.8% of the total £250 million expected to be wagered on the race. The Grand National, held at Aintree Racecourse, draws an annual audience of 600 million globally, including around 13 million UK-based bettors.

The Rising Impact of the Black Market

The BGC warns that illegal betting platforms pose significant risks, operating outside the UK’s strict gambling regulations. Unlike licensed bookmakers, these operators do not contribute to tax revenues or provide essential safeguards to protect players from gambling harm. BGC CEO Grainne Hurst emphasized these concerns, stating, “Almost £10m is predicted to be staked illegally on the unsafe, growing gambling black market at this year’s Grand National, fueling crime, undermining player protection measures, while sucking vital cash from sport and the Treasury.”

The economic consequences of illegal gambling extend beyond individual bettors. The UK government stands to lose substantial tax revenues, with an estimated £3 million in tax contributions and £2 million allocated to the horseracing levy at risk. The legal betting industry, which supports 109,000 jobs and contributes £6.8 billion to the economy, is also under threat from the expanding reach of unregulated betting services.

Exponential Growth in Unlicensed Betting Platforms

A recent study by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities revealed a staggering 522% increase in UK-based traffic to 22 unlicensed betting websites between August 2021 and September 2024. In contrast, visits to 10 legal betting sites grew by only 49% over the same period. This significant rise in illegal betting activity raises concerns over how regulatory changes may be inadvertently pushing bettors toward unregulated alternatives.

BGC research also found that 1.5 million UK residents engage with illegal gambling platforms each year, collectively wagering up to £4.3 billion annually. Young adults appear particularly vulnerable to this trend, with over 20% of bettors aged 18-24 using black-market operators, often through encrypted messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram.

Calls for Balanced Regulation

Industry leaders are urging the UK government to adopt a regulatory framework that ensures bettor protection while maintaining a competitive legal gambling market. Overly stringent restrictions, they argue, may inadvertently drive more punters toward unlicensed operators.

“This should serve as a wake-up call for Government who must guard against overbearing regulations which risk driving punters into the arms of illegal operators,” Hurst stressed. “Balanced regulations and a stable tax regime are the best defenses against this black market menace, which now poses an existential threat to British racing.”

The issue of black-market betting remains a growing concern, with ongoing debates about how best to protect bettors while ensuring the sustainability of British horseracing. With millions set to wager on the Grand National, the challenge for regulators will be to strike the right balance between enforcing safeguards and keeping betting within the legal market.
