Adam Carter, 47, was charged with attempted murder after he attacked another man at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday outside of the Excalibur Hotel and Casino.

The victim was slashed with a steak knife equipped with a six-inch blade, police said.

The incident began when the victim and his wife were walking on a pedestrian bridge and Carter randomly asked the man for some water. When the man apparently ignored Carter, the suspect slashed him with the knife.

The victim suffered cuts to his liver and gallbladder, and was lying on the pavement when Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) officers arrived.

Underwent Surgery, ICU Treatment

He was rushed to University Medical Center. Doctors performed surgery and he was placed in an intensive care unit, according to Las Vegas TV station KSNV.

Updated information on the victim’s condition wasn’t immediately available.

The victim wasn’t identified but police said he was older than 60 years of age.

The walkway where the attack took place runs between New York-New York Hotel & Casino and the Excalibur Hotel & Casino.

Carter was apprehended shortly after the stabbing. He was found outside of the Shake Shack which is inside the New York-New York casino. The knife was found on a nearby street.

When officers spoke to Carter, he uttered phrases such as “someone is gonna kill me” and “they’re chasing me.” Before the stabbing, he had smoked methamphetamine (meth) and drank some alcohol, KSNV reported.

Carter was booked and placed in the Clark County Detention Center where he remained as of this weekend. No bond was set.

Carter wouldn’t allow officials to transport him to a local courthouse on Tuesday and Thursday.

Later in the week, Judge Elana Lee Graham directed that Carter must appear in court on Monday “by any means necessary.”

Tourists Comment

Visitors to the Las Vegas Strip told Las Vegas TV station KLAS the stabbing was scary.

It’s kind of unbelievable, a little bit scary,” Chad Numrich said in a statement to KLAS. “Just because it could be anybody.”

“Honestly it can happen anywhere,” Laura Calk added to the TV station. “And we just have to kind of keep our guard up a little.”

“When you come here, you have to be wary,” Becky Flores also told KLAS.

Carter also was charged in connection with a prior incident. He damaged property inside Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center and was given probation last month, KLAS reported. He will make restitution to that hospital.
